Day Two:
Feeling a need to be educated in my field of interest, I hopped on YouTube and pulled up a short series by David Attenborough on the evolution of life on Earth. As I marveled at the animations re-enacting this miracle, the single-celled organisms that became multi-celled creatures, I sat back and engaged in roaning the appy using the Kolinsky liner brush. Colors like Ceramcoat Medium Grey #425 and Spice Brown 02049 were mixed with Liquitex Titanium white acrylic and thinned down to a milk like consistency - done this way as instructed by Jaime Baker on her Yahoo Group.
And for the next three hours, I roaned, and then roaned, and roaned a little bit more. Time was passing through the Evolution of Life video and I continued to roan.

Oh yeah, back to the horse!!
The blanket area was also worked on detailing it and enhancing using Titanium white mixed with Pearlescent/Iridescent White and thinned down to a milky consistency and carefully applied in layer after layer after thin layer until it built up enough that I was happy with it.
By the time I was done with all that, dinosaurs were in the peak of their domination on Earth and I moved on to adding the appy spots with a mixture of Mars Black and Burnt Umber (Liquitex) applying them with the Kolinsky brush.
Once I was happy with the roaning, and subsequently with the white tobiano pattern on the bay pinto, I began detailing - striping hooves, mottling skin, eyes, etc. All this was also done with the Kolinsky liner (can you tell I like this brush?).
I am one of those old dogs who used clear nail polish to gloss eyes and hooves. I grew up a bit over the last few years (no, really?) and graduated to using Liquitex Gloss Varnish. I had bought a Princeton 3/0 brush and it works very nicely to apply small drops of gloss finish to small horses and big ones.
So, I end this post with a few pictures of the two pieces - the appaloosa now completed and ready to ship to his new home where he will receive a custom made base. The Pinto will be completed shortly and get a base too.
If anyone is interested in obtaining this kit, please email me privately for details.
