After a several sessions over the following weeks, Rocky's likeness began to really take shape. Once the bulk of the work had been done, it was time to begin the process of making comparisons and adjustments to make the likeness as close to life as possible. It took a good many exchanges of additional images, side by side comparisons, and lots of communication. The partnership piece is so important at this stage as well as being able to take a hard critique to make sure your vision and the commissioning client's vision mesh together. This isn't an easy endeavor if you are unwilling to handle critiques. Some say you need to grow a thick skin, but to me, it's all in the presentation of how ideas and suggestions are shared through communication. People can be kind and get their point across and others can be rude and obnoxious. I was so lucky that working with Shannon was one of those very pleasurable experiences. Details like hoof color and pattern not to mention mane and tail color were challenging. And yes, I even asked for pictures of under his head to make sure all details were covered! Shannon was awesome in providing 360 degree views of the lower legs and feet to dig in deeper to the piece's paint work. More hair by hair detailing and fully detailing out the feet with the patterns of shell and greys were necessary and as usual I relied on my Kolinsky Reservoir liner brush and some Ceramcoat Color Float added to the water used to thin my paints was of great help. In the end, taking time and great care and communicating well with the commissioning party rendered a pretty good and convincing miniature version of Rocky in the end. Here is the end result... Someone asked me how it is I, as a painting artist, can put so much time and attention into a paint job and let it go afterward. This is how and why I do it... My deepest gratitude to Shannon for allowing me the opportunity to paint her beloved Rocky on a model for her. I thank you for trusting me to do the job and for your patience for the time it took to finish and for sharing your lovely boy with me. So, what is next for this blog? How about following the journey of this poor guy?
Stay tuned!!!!

AuthorMy name is Donna Lorello and for as long as I can remember I have loved all things nature. I loved to draw and play with clay as a kid and dabbled with different kinds of painting after being inspired by Bob Ross. Horses and dinosaurs were always a huge part of my life. I collected plastic dinosaur kits in my early youth and started with model horses as a preteen. Once I got more deeply involved with the model horse hobby and learning about custom painting Breyer horses in particular, "Arcadia Farms" was born. My pretend horse stable was the start of what would later evolve into a small hobby business. Now known as "Arcadian Creations", a part of my "Sunshine's Creative Endeavors" arts/crafts and nature photography business, this blog will focus on the model horses, dinosaurs and other critters I paint.
